A total of 9 runs were made
as listed in Table 1. For runs 1, 2, 3, 8, and 9, the boat was run at
constant power until conditions were stabilized, then the readings were
taken. For runs 4, 5, 6, and 7 the boat was essentially stopped for
several minutes until the drogue sank to a considerable depth. Then the
engines were accelerated to a high rpm and held at that power until the
first 10 to 20 elements of the drogue began to surface on the top of the
water. For runs 8 and 9, a 75-foot length of the drogue, which included 45
elements, was removed. This left 45 drogue elements
The measured drag loads are
shown on Table 1 and plotted on Figure 19. Since the boat was pitching and
rolling, a maximum and average load is shown. Also in some instances the
boat yawed and the drogue was not directly astern.
